Kindergarten Newsletter November 24th - November 25th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we wove some placemats for our Thanksgiving celebration on Tuesday. We talked about Thanksgiving traditions in our families and we made a Spanish book about things we are thankful for with Teacher Caroline. We also began reading groups, working on words that have the short a sound. And in math, we worked on some 2 dimensional shapes. We had a lot of fun working together as a group to write a story about a turkey.

Math: This week we are going to focus on putting numbers in order, and ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)

Literacy: We will begin our 3rd book working on the short a sound this week. We will also do an assessment where we write down sounds that the teacher calls out.

Writing: We will each write a story about how to catch a turkey.

Social Studies, Art & Science: Students who have been absent will catch up by making their Thanksgiving Placemats. Please send in a family photo (not returnable) if you have not already done so. We will also make a cornucopia. On Tuesday, we will make some mini pumpkin pies to have for our snack.

Food drive: Thank you to everyone who brought in food for the Thanksgiving baskets. As we move into December, we will continue to have a box outside our classroom to collect non-perishable items for Christmas boxes.

Parent-Board Meet & Greet: The Meet & Greet has been rescheduled to January 15th from 6:30-7:30pm in the Conrad Room. We welcome your feedback on how you think our school is doing! Please RSVP to let us know if you are planning on attending.

Family Fun Night: We had a lot of fun at the Family Fun Night on Friday. Thank you to all those who came and helped to make it such a great success!

Bake Sale: Our Bake Sale will be running during school hours on Monday and Tuesday (November 24th and 25th.) If you are dropping off items to sell, please do so by 8:45am.

Santa Breakfast: Our Santa Breakfast will be on Saturday December 6th, from 9:00-11:00. Santa will give a gift to each child who attends. Breakfast will be $3.00 for kids and $5.00 for adults. We will need help setting up, making and serving breakfast, and with clean up. This is a great chance for parents to get some volunteer time!! Tickets will be on sale between now and December 4th.

Kindergarten Newsletter November 17th - November 21st

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: What a crazy week it was! Tuesday was the Veteran’s Day holiday, and there was no school on Thursday due to bad weather. Let’s hope for smooth sailing this week. J Last week we discussed what it means to be thankful. We also worked on the ch sound and discussed the differences between vowels and consonants. (Consonants have one sound and we close our mouth in some way when we make them; Vowels have more than one sound and they are made without anything blocking the sound from coming through.) In math, we rolled dice and matched the number we rolled with that many turkeys and made some patterns with Thanksgiving pictures.

Math: We are going to begin learning our two-dimensional shapes this week. We will make shapes using Geo-Boards and begin working on a Shape Book to bring home. We will also use shape blocks to fill in some puzzles.

Literacy: This week we begin reading groups! We will split into 2 small groups, where we will practice our reading skills. We will read some mini-books containing words with the short a (as in cat) sound. After we have finished the books, they will be in your child’s cubby. Please practice at home to reinforce the learning we are doing in school.

Writing: We will work on how to write a story and that they each have a beginning, middle, and end. We will write a class story about a turkey and hopefully make it into a book to hang outside the classroom. Students usually have a lot of fun seeing their ideas put into a book.

Social Studies & Art: This week we will continue learning about Thanksgiving. As we didn’t get to it last week with Thursday’s bad weather, we will decorate our Food Drive box to put outside our classroom. We will make pictures of Indian Corn and a Spanish ‘Giving Thanks’ book. We will weave some placemats for our Thanksgiving classroom celebration. Please remember to send in a picture of your family on Monday.

Sharing: Thank you for helping your student limit their sharing to only 1 item per day.

Food drive: Our school is partnering with the church in this year’s food drive. We will have a box outside our classroom for your child to donate some non-perishable items, such as canned or boxed food. This will help make up the food boxes the church gives out during the holiday season. The food drive continues through December.

LAPSK Board: Due to weather, our School Board Meet and Greet had to be rescheduled. I will let you know as soon as a new date and time is set.

Family Fun Night: Our first Family Fun Night of the school year is this Friday November 21st. The theme is “Make and Take Holiday Crafts” and it is free! Come join us from 5:30-7:00pm.

Bake Sale: Our Bake Sale is coming up on November 24th and 25th during school hours. We would love to have donated items to sell such as breads, pies, cakes, or cookies, etc. Cby and purchase some of the tasty treats!

Santa Breakfast: Our Santa Breakfast will be on Saturday December 6th, from 9:00-11:00. Santa will give a gift to each child who attends. Breakfast will be $3.00 for kids and $5.00 for adults. We will need help making and serving breakfast, set up and clean up.  This is a great chance for parents to get some volunteer time!! Tickets will be on sale between now and December 4th.

Shoparoo: Little Acorn is now a member of Shoparoo (shoparoo.com). You can download the Shoparoo App to earn points for our school. Shoparoo will not ask for personal information and all information is anonymous. Just snap pictures of your receipts from any store, big or small, that sells grocery items to earn Roo Points (cash donations) for your school. Whether you’re shopping at a supercenter, dollar store, or local convenience store - it doesn’t matter where you shop or what items you buy - Shoparoo will make a cash donation for every receipt! Submit up to 20 grocery receipts within a rolling 7 day period.  Parents can scan receipts from restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, craft stores, electronics, sports stores, office supply, bookstores and café’s.

Kindergarten Newsletter November 3rd - November 5th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we worked on the letters V, W, X, Y, and Z. We learned some bat facts and had fun with listening activities where we had to follow directions to make a bat scene and a skeleton.

Math: We are continuing working on numbers to 20, especially the teens. We will make some patterns using people from the different branches of the military. We will also do a Writing Numbers assessment to show our parents at conference time.

Literacy: This week we will work on sh, th, and wh. We will brainstorm words beginning with those digraphs (letter pairs) each day. We will also work on sounding out more words and writing them on whiteboards. Students have really enjoyed challenging themselves with this activity.

Writing: In handwriting we will work on the letters C and O. We will write a recap of what we did and saw on Halloween and make Thank You cards for our Veterans.

Social Studies, Art & Science: This week we will go outside and observe trees again. Now that we are well into fall, we should see lots of changes. We will draw and label pictures of our observations. We will also introduce the topic of Veterans Day. We will learn the 5 branches of the military – army, air force, navy, marine and coast guard.

Sharing: Thank you for helping your student limit their sharing to only 1 item per day and for making sure that it is connected to the learning we are doing in the classroom. This week items should begin with any of the letters sh, th and wh, or have something to do with Fall or Veterans Day.

Classroom Halloween Party: Thank you for sending in toppings for our Halloween Party. We had so much fun putting together our English Muffin Pizzas!

Parent-Teacher Conferences: On Thursday (November 6th) there will be no class as we take time to have parent-teacher conferences. The sign-up sheet is outside the classroom and I put a reminder of the time you chose in your child’s cubby. Please take the time to fill out and return the form letting me know of questions or concerns you have.

No School: In addition to having no classes on Thursday for parent-teacher conferences, there will be no school on Friday as the Church has an event planned.

Fundraisers: As you know, LAPSK is a non-profit school and fundraisers are very important to us. Our other current fundraisers are the Kiggins Theater, Scholastic Books (http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs  - Click on the State, the City, then the School to order), Box Tops for Education and Usborne Books eFair (https://n3313.myuban.com/634160).
