Kindergarten Newsletter for May 8th-12th, 2015

Recap Of The Week: Last week we worked hard practicing for our graduation ceremony. We also made some Father’s Day cards & gifts. We went to the park for recess on Thursday and played with the parachute. And on Friday, we wore pyjamas for our camping theme and made s’mores!

Progress Reports: Report cards will be in your cubby boxes on Monday morning. Hopefully this will give you time to go through it and if necessary, come to me with any questions or comments you may have.

Graduation Program: Our graduation ceremony will be on Tuesday, June 9th at 10:00am. We are hard at work practicing our program every day. The class will sing some songs for you and then we will present each student with a certificate. Afterwards, we will join you for some snacks and watch a slideshow with pictures of the whole school year. This is an important and exciting day for our kids as they get ready to move on from Little Acorn.

Classroom Clean-up: On Monday (June 8th), we will all work together to get the classroom cleaned for summer break. The kids will help out by cleaning toys and taking down bulletin board stuff. This is a great way for the students to get some closure on the year and give back to the class by helping one another. Everyone who helps will get an ice-cream sandwich.

All School Picnic: On June 10th, we will have our annual end of school year picnic at Felida Park from 10:00-12:00. All families are invited to this potluck event. The school will cook/provide the hot dogs and condiments. There is sign-up sheet outside the classroom for your contributions.

Summer Camps: We will have 3 summer camps this year: Art Explosion (June 15-19), Knights & Princesses (July 13-17) and Super Hero Week (July 20-24). Registration has already started. Camp is $95 per child per week; $175 for 2 for one week. There is a $25 non-refundable registration fee that will be applied towards camp tuition.

Kindergarten Newsletter for June 1st-5th, 2015

Recap Of The Week: Last week we learned about Healthy Food. We separated some food pictures into the 5 food groups; grains, fruits, vegetables, protein and dairy. We also made a fruit salad and finished the week by making a collage of Healthy Foods and Junk Food.

This Week: We are going to have a camping theme for our last full week of school!!! On Thursday - weather permitting - we will walk over to Shumway Park to play for recess. We will go about 11 o’clock and will be back to school by 11:50, in plenty of time for pick-up. On Friday, we will get to wear our pyjamas to school and we will make s’mores.

Math: We have been doing lots of review on counting, using number lines to add and subtract, solid shapes and figuring out how many more it takes to make ten. This week will have some more review and then some assessments to finish!

Literacy: We finished up reading groups on Friday. Our Kindergartners have made so much progress this year. Make sure to continue reading with your child over the summer and encouraging them to do some themselves when they can. This will help prevent some of the loss that usually occurs during summer break. We will continue to do some Word Work though. Our last sight words for the school-year are ‘new,’ ‘say,’ ‘soon,’ ‘want,’ and ‘yes.’

Writing:  All groups will work on these 2 “story starter” prompts this week: “The best part of Kindergarten was … “ and “When I go camping I ... “

Science, Social Studies & Art: We will do a ‘listen and draw’ activity with a camping scene and learn about ways to have fun in the sun. We will also work on a ‘special surprise’ to give our dads for Father’s Day.

Progress Reports: I’m planning on sending home the end of year (spring) reports on the Friday, June 5th. This gives you time to go through it and if necessary, ask questions about what it says before the end of the school year.

Graduation Program: Our graduation ceremony will be on Tuesday, June 9th at 10:00am. We are hard at work practicing our program every day. The class will sing some songs for you and then we will present each student with a certificate. Kindergarten Newsletter for May 25th-29th, 2015

Recap Of The Week: Last week, we did lots of things centered around bugs. We made bug hats and made ladybug art. We also learned the Spanish word for ladybug – mariquita!  We have been watching our pea plants growing fast all week. We can see all the parts now: stem, leaves and roots.

Math: Last week we did some patterning activities with bugs. We also worked some more on the concept of “how many more to make 10.” Students struggled somewhat with this concept, so we will work some more on that this week.

Literacy: Can you believe that there are only 2 more weeks left of reading groups?! Our Kindergartners have made so much progress in reading!!! Please keep reading with your child as those mini-books come home. Practice at home reinforces the learning at school. Make sure your student is tracking as they read. Our sight words for this week are ‘all,’ ‘be,’ ‘now,’ ‘saw,’ and ‘white.’ Throughout the week students make flash cards, figure out which words go in which shape box, make word pyramids, match words in different fonts, and create their very own word search to give to a friend to solve.

Writing:  Some groups will finish the “If I could be any insect I …” story starter, and then later in the week the prompts will be “My favorite healthy food is ... “ We are working on doing our best and never giving up during writing time.

Science, Health Social Studies & Art: This week we are going to be learning about healthy foods. We will learn about the food groups, talk about junk food versus healthy food, and make a fruit salad to eat for snack on Thursday. We will also send home our Pea Plants this week.

Progress Reports: The pre-school classes will be sending home progress reports the last week of May. Kindergarteners will receive their end of year (spring) reports on the last Friday of the school year, June 5th. This allows us to continue learning and assessing until the very end of Kindergarten.

Graduation Program: We are getting close to graduation and the end of the year, so we have begun practicing for our program. Our ceremony will be on Tuesday, June 9th at 10:00am. This is an important and exciting day for the kids as they get ready to move on from Little Acorn.

Fit and Fun at First: This is a fun day hosted by the church on May 30th. There will be a few different fun runs, a bounce house and games.

Summer Camps: We will have 3 summer camps this year: Art Explosion (June 15-19), Knights & Princesses (July 13-17) and Super Hero Week (July 20-24). Registration has already started. Kindergarten News for May 18th-22nd, 2015

Recap Of The Week: Our butterflies emerged from their chrysalises during class time on Wednesday!!! Students got to see them as they crawled around and drank some sugar water while they waited for their wings to dry. On Friday we released them and watched as they explored the flowering bushes outside the building, before they flew away.

Math: Last week reviewed our flat shapes rectangle, square, triangle, circle, oval, diamond, heart and hexagon. We explored the solid shapes cubes, cones, cylinders and spheres and compared them to the flat shapes we know. This week we will do some more work with figuring out how many more to make 10. We will also do some patterning activities.

Literacy: Can you believe that there are only a few more weeks left of reading groups?! Our Kindergartners have made so much progress in reading!!! Please keep reading with your child as those mini-books come home. Practice at home reinforces the learning at school. Make sure your student is tracking as they read. Our sight words for this week are ‘black,’ ‘brown,’ ‘four,’ ‘good,’ and ‘please.’ Throughout the week students make flash cards, figure out which words go in which shape box, make word pyramids, match words in different fonts, and create their very own word search to give to a friend to solve.

Writing:  Some groups will finish the “If I was a butterfly …” story starter, and then later in the week the prompts will be “If I could be any insect I ... “ We have also been talking about when to use upper case letters in a sentence: 1) The first letter in a sentence; 2) The word ‘I’; 3) The first letter of a name.

Science, Social Studies & Art: Our seeds have sprouted roots and shoots. We are waiting for those shoots to reach above the soil and grow a little taller before sending them home. This week we are going to learn about insects and do some bug art.

Kindred: On Thursday, we will go across the street to sing for the “Grandmas and Grandpas” for the last time this year.

Progress Reports: The pre-school classes will be sending home progress reports the last week of May. Kindergarteners will receive their end of year (spring) reports on the last Friday of the school year, June 5th. This allows us to continue learning and assessing until the very end of Kindergarten.

Seussical Jr. Play: As you know, we will be attending the play on Tuesday. There will be no school that day. Make sure to bring in your ticket money ($6) to either the office or the classroom. Please be at the Fort Vancouver High School Theater a few minutes early to get seated. As with all our school field trips, parents are responsible for transportation and supervision of their children.

Playground Clean-up: Thank you to everyone who came  to our playground clean-up on Saturday. We got lots of work done and our playground is looking great!!!

Family Fun Night: Our last Family Fun Night of the year will be on Thursday evening from 5:30-7:00pm. We will be exploring Math & Science on this evening and there will be lots of fun hands-on activities to participate in. This is a free family event and we hope your family will come join the fun.

Graduation Program: We are getting close to graduation and the end of the year, so we have begun practicing for our program. Our ceremony will be on Tuesday, June 9th at 10:00am.
