Hello
Kindergarten Families!
Recap
of the Week: What a crazy week it was! Tuesday
was the Veteran’s Day holiday, and there was no school on Thursday due to bad
weather. Let’s hope for smooth sailing this week. J Last
week we discussed what it means to be thankful. We also worked on the ch sound
and discussed the differences between vowels and consonants. (Consonants have
one sound and we close our mouth in some way when we make them; Vowels have more
than one sound and they are made without anything blocking the sound from
coming through.) In
math, we rolled dice and matched the number we rolled with that many turkeys
and made some patterns with Thanksgiving pictures.
Math: We are going to begin learning
our two-dimensional shapes this week. We will make shapes using Geo-Boards and begin
working on a Shape Book to bring home. We will also use shape blocks to fill in
some puzzles.
Literacy: This week we begin
reading groups! We will split into 2 small groups, where we will practice our
reading skills. We will read some mini-books containing words with the short a
(as in cat) sound. After we have finished the books, they will be in your
child’s cubby. Please practice at home to reinforce the learning we are doing
in school.
Writing: We will work on
how to write a story and that they each have a beginning, middle, and end. We
will write a class story about a turkey and hopefully make it into a book to
hang outside the classroom. Students usually have a lot of fun seeing their
ideas put into a book.
Social Studies & Art: This
week we will continue learning about Thanksgiving. As we didn’t get to it last
week with Thursday’s bad weather, we will decorate our Food Drive box to put
outside our classroom. We will make pictures of Indian Corn and a Spanish
‘Giving Thanks’ book. We will weave some placemats for our Thanksgiving
classroom celebration. Please remember to send in a picture of your family on
Monday.
Sharing: Thank you for
helping your student limit their sharing to only 1 item per day.
Food drive: Our school is partnering with the church in this
year’s food drive. We will have a box outside our classroom for your child to donate
some non-perishable items, such as canned or boxed food. This will help make up
the food boxes the church gives out during the holiday season. The food drive
continues through December.
LAPSK Board: Due to weather, our School Board Meet and Greet had
to be rescheduled. I will let you know as soon as a new date and time is set.
Family Fun Night: Our first Family Fun Night of the school year is
this Friday November 21st. The theme is “Make and Take
Holiday Crafts” and it is free! Come join us from 5:30-7:00pm.
Bake Sale: Our Bake Sale is coming up on November 24th and 25th
during school hours. We would love to have donated items to sell such as
breads, pies, cakes, or cookies, etc. Cby and purchase some of the tasty
treats!
Santa Breakfast: Our Santa Breakfast will be on Saturday December
6th, from 9:00-11:00. Santa will give a gift to each child who attends.
Breakfast will be $3.00 for kids and $5.00 for adults. We will need help making
and serving breakfast, set up and clean up.
This is a great chance for parents to get some volunteer time!! Tickets will be on sale between now and
December 4th.
Shoparoo: Little Acorn is now a member of Shoparoo (shoparoo.com). You can download the Shoparoo App to earn points for our
school. Shoparoo will not ask for
personal information and all information is anonymous. Just snap pictures of
your receipts from any store, big or small, that sells grocery items to earn Roo Points (cash donations) for your school. Whether you’re shopping at
a supercenter, dollar store, or local convenience store - it doesn’t matter
where you shop or what items you buy - Shoparoo
will make a cash donation for every receipt! Submit up to 20 grocery receipts
within a rolling 7 day period. Parents
can scan receipts from restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, craft
stores, electronics, sports stores, office supply, bookstores and cafĂ©’s.

Volunteer
Opportunities: Volunteers
are needed for the Family Fun Night, the Bake Sale and for the Santa Breakfast.
You can sign up to help at the school office. You may also make donations of
supplies or snacks to the school and it will go towards your 2 hours of
volunteer time. A list of the school needs is posted outside our classroom or
you can talk to Teacher Katie. Thanks!
Winter
Attire:
Please send your kindergartner to school with coats and footwear appropriate
for the weather. Even hats and gloves/mittens are needed on some days as this
week has shown us! Remember we go outside as much as we can, as long as it is
not too cold and there is not too much of a downpour.
Bike Helmets: Remember
to send a helmet to school for your child if he or she would like to
ride on tricycles or scooters during outside play. Bikes are out on sunny days.
Sickness: If your
Kindergartener is sick, please call the school office, or you can send me an
email or a text so we can keep track of illnesses. With cold and flu season upon
us, please have your child wash their hands before coming into the classroom. Remember
to keep kids home if they are running a fever, have a runny nose with mucus, or
a constant cough that they can't keep covered. If they can't participate in our
class activities, let them stay at home and get better. Thanks for your help in
keeping illness to a minimum.
Weather Related School Closures: Remember, if Vancouver School District declares a 2 Hour Late
Start or is Closed, then our school will be closed too. In case of bad weather,
watch for emails and/or text message notifications from Little Acorn and from
our Remind.com accounts. The Remind.com number
for Little Acorn is 307-459-3175, class code
lapsk20. For Kindergarten, the number is 503-342-8657, class code @473363.
Please
feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. Send a text, give me
a call, or you can email. I am here to help you and your child have a great
kindergarten year!
Thank you
for sharing your child with us,
Teacher
Sinead & Teacher Caroline
