Kindergarten News for the Week March 9-13th, 2015

Recap Of Last Week: Last week we made a Lorax and wrote about how we would take care of the earth. We also continued working on subtraction and began using rulers to measure. On Friday, we got to experience Oobleck, and discussed whether it is a solid or a liquid.

Math: This week we will do more activities with subtraction. We will be doing assessments with addition, counting in writing and writing numbers when they are dictated.

Literacy: Please practice reading those mini-books as they come home. Encourage your child to sound words out aloud, and to blend the sounds smoothly so they can hear what the word is; i.e. ‘flllaaap’ instead of ‘f-l-a-p.’ As students encounter longer words to sound out, it is easier for their brain to put words together if they are doing so smoothly. We will continue to play the “boom” sight word game this week.

Writing: Last week we read ‘Oh The Thinks You Can Think’ by Dr. Seuss, and we will be really encouraging students to dig deeper to find topics to write about. We will also be doing assessments to see what sounds and letters students can write when they are dictated.

Social Studies, Art & Science: We will read about Wind this week, and make a windsock. In honor of St Patrick’s Day, we will make some leprechauns to hang on our bulletin board.

Hough St Patrick’s Day Parade: On Tuesday, March 17th, our school will be walking in the Parade to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and our community. The parade starts in front of Hough Elementary and makes a loop through the neighborhood, onto Main Street and back to the school. It is a very easy walk and strollers are welcome! Please come with your family and show support for Little Acorn by joining us in the parade. As always, parents are responsible for transportation and supervision of their children during the event.

Family Breakfast & Art Show: We would love for you and your family to join us on Saturday, March 21st, to celebrate the Children’s Art and Our Families.

LAPSK Auction Night: Mark your calendars for Saturday April 18th and make plans to join us for the LAPSK Silent Auction & Dinner at Big Al’s. Ticket prices are $18 per person or $34 per couple until April 10th. After that they will be $22 per person or $40 per couple. This is an adult-only night, and a night where we can have lots of fun, play games and have a good time. **Families who purchase auction tickets will get free bowling coupons.

Class Basket: Our auction basket theme is “Kindergarten’s Favorite Things.” There is a sign-up sheet outside the classroom for you to select from. We will take your voluntary donations up until April 1st.

Your time in class is very helpful and you get a chance to see what our day is like and how your child is interacting. A sign-up sheet is outside the classroom.
