Kindergarten Newsletter for March 30 - April 3, 2015

We have some exciting news!!! Little Acorn Preschool & Kindergarten was voted “Best Preschool” of Clark County by the Columbian newspaper! We are so excited about this honor and have been getting a lot of interest on Facebook about our school. You can check out all the winners at http://bestofclarkcounty.com/winners/2015.

Recap Of Last Week: Last week we had lots of fun exploring measurement and volume with beans. We also made another rainy day scene and wrote about what we like to do when it is raining. For science, we learned about what happens in the soil during the spring and had a great time making up “dirt cups” to eat for snack.

Math & Science: We will continue to explore volume and measurement with the cups, spoons and pitchers in our sensory table. We will also be learning about eggs as part of our spring theme.

Literacy:  Our sight words for this week ‘blue,’ ‘is,’ ‘it,’ ‘said,’ and ‘see.’  Throughout the week students make flash cards, figure out which words go in which shape box, make word pyramids, match words in different fonts, and create their very own word search to give to a friend to solve.

Writing: During writing time we will be making sure to use finger spaces between our words. Our story starter prompts this week will be “If I lived underground ...” and “The egg hatched and …”

Social Studies & Art: We were not able to make our kites last week, so we are going to make sure to get those done this week. We will also be learning about eggs, and doing some experiments with them.

Seussical Jr. Play: Our school will be attending the Seussical Jr play presented by Journey Theater Company on Tuesday May 19th at 9:30, at the Fort Vancouver High School theater. Tickets will be $6. Please sign up on the form outside the classroom.

LAPSK Auction Night: Tickets for this fun event are on sale now. With your ticket you will get dinner/drink and a coupon for bowling (to be used with your family at the next visit.) Hough St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Our school will be walking in the Parade on Tuesday, March 17th at 12:00pm, to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and our community. We will let classes out early at 11:45 so you can collect your kids and meet us there. You may also want to bring your child a lunch to eat before we walk, since it is during a normal lunchtime. The parade starts in front of Hough Elementary and makes a loop through the neighborhood, onto Main Street and back to the school. It is a very easy walk and strollers are welcome! Please come with your family and show support for Little Acorn by joining us in the parade. As always, parents are responsible for transportation and supervision of their children during the event.

Kindergarten News for the Week March 9-13th, 2015

Recap Of Last Week: Last week we made a Lorax and wrote about how we would take care of the earth. We also continued working on subtraction and began using rulers to measure. On Friday, we got to experience Oobleck, and discussed whether it is a solid or a liquid.

Math: This week we will do more activities with subtraction. We will be doing assessments with addition, counting in writing and writing numbers when they are dictated.

Literacy: Please practice reading those mini-books as they come home. Encourage your child to sound words out aloud, and to blend the sounds smoothly so they can hear what the word is; i.e. ‘flllaaap’ instead of ‘f-l-a-p.’ As students encounter longer words to sound out, it is easier for their brain to put words together if they are doing so smoothly. We will continue to play the “boom” sight word game this week.

Writing: Last week we read ‘Oh The Thinks You Can Think’ by Dr. Seuss, and we will be really encouraging students to dig deeper to find topics to write about. We will also be doing assessments to see what sounds and letters students can write when they are dictated.

Social Studies, Art & Science: We will read about Wind this week, and make a windsock. In honor of St Patrick’s Day, we will make some leprechauns to hang on our bulletin board.

Hough St Patrick’s Day Parade: On Tuesday, March 17th, our school will be walking in the Parade to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and our community. The parade starts in front of Hough Elementary and makes a loop through the neighborhood, onto Main Street and back to the school. It is a very easy walk and strollers are welcome!
