Kindergarten Newletter October 20th - October 24th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we worked on the letters M, N, O and P. Students really enjoyed coming up with words beginning with those sounds. We are working on sounding out 3 letter words together, such as mad, map, pig, etc. We investigated some mini-pumpkins to see how tall, heavy and wide they are before decorating them. We also made paper plate owls and the scene for ‘5 Little Pumpkins Sitting On The Gate.’

Math: We continue to work on the meaning of numbers. This week we will working on numbers between 11 and 20 by matching pictures of groups to their number, playing a domino game and putting the numbers 10 to 20 in order.

Literacy: This week we will work on the letters Q, R, S, T, and U. We will continue to build 3 letter words from the sounds we already know and sounding out words we come across in our daily activities. We will look for and highlight the word spider in a mini-book later in the week.

Writing: In handwriting we will work on the letters L, U, V, W, X and Y. We will continue doing some “side by side” drawings where students listen to teacher directions and look to the board to learn how to use shapes to make drawings. We will be doing some writing about spiders after working on our first story web.

Art & Science: We will be focusing on spiders this week as the class has shown a lot of interest in them this year. We will read some science books and make lists of facts to add to and art project where we make a spider. We will also be making a scarecrow together so if you have any newspapers at home that you no longer need, please send them for us to use!

Sharing: Thank you for helping your student limit their sharing to only 1 item per day and for making sure that it is connected to the learning we are doing in the classroom. This week items should begin with any of the letters Q-U, or have something to do with Spiders.

Pumpkin Patch: Hope you had as much fun at Vancouver Pumpkin Patch as we did. The rain held off for the most part and students seemed to have a great time looking for pumpkins in the mud. If you took any pictures of your student after they chose their pumpkin, please send me 1 or 2. I would love to add them to the students’ end of year portfolios.

Fundraisers: The SCENTSY Fundraiser has been extended to Wednesday, October 22nd. 100% of profits go to our school. As you know, LAPSK is a non-profit school and fundraisers are very important to us. Our other current fundraisers are the Kiggins Theater, Scholastic Books (http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs  - Click on the State, the City, then the School to order), Box Tops for Education and Usborne Books eFair (https://n3313.myuban.com/634160).

Trunk or Treat: The Church is sponsoring a fun family event called “Trunk or treat” on Sunday October 26th. The Parking lot will be filled with folks and their decorated “Trunks” for your kids to trick or treat at. LAPSK will have a trunk and the teachers will be dressed in costumes. A flyer with all the information was in your child’s cubbie box last week.

Classroom Halloween Party: The Kindergarten class will have its party on Friday, October 31st. Students can come to school in their costumes (non-scary and no weapons). We will be walking across the street to Kindred to parade through and show the Grandmas and Grandpas how great we look in our costumes. Then we will have some English muffin pizzas and play some fun games. Thank you for signing up to bring a topping!

Volunteer Hours: You may make donations of supplies or snacks to the school and it will go towards your 2 hours of volunteer time. A list of the school needs is posted outside our classroom or you can talk to Teacher Katie. Thanks!

Parent-Teacher Conferences: On November 6th there will be no class as we take time to have parent-teacher conferences. I will have a sign-up sheet outside the classroom this week for you to schedule a time to meet. I will also be sending home a paper for you to let me know of questions or concerns you have.

Bike Helmets: Remember to send a helmet to school for your child if he or she would like to ride on tricycles or scooters during outside play. Bikes are out on sunny days.

Sickness: If your Kindergartener is sick, please call the school office, or you can send me an email or a text so we can keep track of illnesses. With cold and flu season upon us, please have your child wash their hands before coming into the classroom. Remember to keep kids home if they are running a fever, have a runny nose with mucus, or a constant cough that they can't keep covered. If they can't participate in our class activities, let them stay at home and get better. Thanks for your help in keeping illness to a minimum.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. Send a text, give me a call, or you can email. I am here to help you and your child have a great kindergarten year!

Thank you for sharing your child with us,

Kindergarten Newsletter October 13th - October 17th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we worked on the letters H, I, J, K, and L. Now that we have learned almost half of the alphabet, we are beginning to put 3 letter words together, such as had, bag, big, etc. We experimented with mixing colors together and learned the Spanish color words this week too.

Math: As we will be going to the pumpkin patch at the end of the week, we are going to do some math activities using mini-pumkins. We will weigh them, measure them, and estimate how many seeds are inside the teacher’s one. We will also look at more and less and work on filling in the missing numbers between 0 and 20.

Literacy: This week we will work on the letters m, n, o, and p. We will continue to build 3 letter words from the sounds we already know. We will also start sounding out words we come across in our daily activities.

Writing: In handwriting we will work on the letters H and K. We will continue doing some “side by side” drawings where I instruct students how to draw with shapes. Then they will be encouraged to sound out the parts of the drawing so they can label it.

Art & Science: This week we are going to do some explorations with pumpkins. In addition to math activities, we will also be doing some pumpkin art projects and reading a poem called ‘The 5 Little Pumpkins.’

Sharing: Thank you for helping your student limit their sharing to only 1 item per day and for making sure that it is connected to the learning we are doing in the classroom. This week items should begin with any of the letters m-p, or have something to do with Pumpkins.

Pumpkin Patch: Our school will be going to the pumpkin patch this Friday Oct. 17 @ 9:30 AM. There will be no class on this day. Children need to have transportation and supervision provided by a parent(s). The cost is $5 per child. If other family members would like to join in the fun they may pay $5 to get a pumpkin too. If you are just coming for fun, you do not need to pay (no pumpkin). We go rain or shine and meet at the farm. Please turn in the fee by end of school Thursday. Check out the link and see this venue that is new to our school this year.

On Thursday, we will be the only class in the building as the other classes go to the Pumpkin Patch on 2 days. Please make sure to be out of the building by 12:30 PM on Thursday, as the Church has events planned in the afternoon. Thank you!

Kindergarten Newsletter October 6th - October 10th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we worked on the letters C, D, E, F, and G. Throughout the week we brainstormed words beginning with those sounds, acting out the animal alphabet signal whenever we came across the sound of the day. One of our favorite activities this week was making our own Leaf Man following a reading of the book. We had fun matching numbers with domino cards and tiles too.

Math: We continue working on the meaning of numbers, matching digits to groups of items and domino-style pictures. When we look at the domino pictures, we will discuss how we can break the numbers into smaller parts. We will also do some puzzles and games to reinforce this.

Literacy: This week we will work on the letters h, i, j, k, and l. We are starting to build 3 letter words from the sounds we already know. We will work on reading from left to right and using our fingers to help track as we sound out words.

Writing: This week students are going to be encouraged to find topics of their own to write about. We really want to encourage students to make the effort and not be afraid to try to express themselves, so we won’t worry about real spelling. We are also working on penmanship and keeping our letters the correct size on the penmanship lines. Students are beginning to point out whether a letter is tall (like t), small (like c), or if it has a tail (like p or g).

Science: This week we are going to work on colors. We will do some color mixing with finger paints and with droppers.

Sharing: Thank you for helping your student limit their sharing to only 1 item per day and for making sure that it is connected to the learning we are doing in the classroom. This week items should begin with any of the letters h-l, or have something to do with Fall.

Carnival: The LAPSK was a great success last Friday. It was great to see so many families enjoying this evening out together. And thank you very much to those families who volunteered. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Picture Day: We will be doing individual and classroom pictures on Monday October 6th at 10:00am. Please send the order forms with your child on Monday. We will make sure there are no "messy" activities tomorrow, so students can wear their nice clothes.

Pumpkin Patch: Our class will visit the pumpkin patch on Friday, October 17thIf you are not planning on going on the field trip with us, please be aware that the school will be closed that day. Kindergarten is going to be the only class in the building on the 16th, as the other classes will be on their field trips. We are going to Vancouver Pumpkin Patch this year (http://www.vancouverpumpkinpatch.com/). It is located at 18905 NE 83rd Street,
 Vancouver, WA 98682.

Bike Helmets: Remember to send a helmet to school for your child if he or she would like to ride on tricycles or scooters during outside play. Bikes are out on sunny days.

Sickness: If your Kindergartener is sick, please call the school office, or you can send me an email or a text. If they can't participate in our class activities, let them stay at home and get better. Thanks for your help in keeping illness to a minimum.
