Recap
of the Week: Students really impressed me with
their number writing assessment this week. While some of us are still working
on those tricky teens, others see the pattern in our counting system and can
write almost to 100! We also had a classroom meeting about how we play
together, as there have been some unkind words and hands used this week. It was
really exciting to hear students coming up with ways to solve these problems
with just a little guidance from me!
Math: This week we are going to look
at ways to compose a number. For example, 1+4=5; 2+3=5; etc. We will use 2-colored
counters to see how this can really be true. As part of this activity we learn
how “=” really means “is the same as.” We will challenge ourselves with
addition to 10 and work to figure out “how many more to make 10?” using some
Unifix Cubes to build 10.
Literacy: This week we are
going to break into 3 reading groups, in order to meet students at their
individual levels. Some will have to repeat books we read earlier this year,
some will keep going at the same rate, and others will start moving at a faster
pace than before.
Writing: We are going to
really begin Writer’s Workshop. As an introduction we will discuss how real
authors have to come up with a topic. They then write, revise and publish their
story. To show how the process works, the class will write a story called “How
to Build A Snowman” before revising and publishing it together. Later in the
week, students will be coming up with their own ideas and revising them before
Teacher Caroline publishes it on the computer for them to share with the class.
Social Studies, Art & Science: We continue our winter theme about snow, ice and winter animals.
We will learn about symmetry and make snowflakes as well as painting and
labeling a winter scene. For a fun art project that goes with our “How to Build
A Snowman” story, we are going to make Olaf the Snowman.
We will
also learn about Martin Luther King and why he was so important to us. We will
do an activity that shows students how it feels when one group is singled out
and the others are excluded. This will lead to a simple discussion about
equality.

Winter
Attire:
Please send your kindergartner to school with coats and footwear appropriate
for the weather. Even hats and gloves/mittens are needed on some days as this
week has shown us! Remember we go outside as much as we can, as long as it is
not too cold and there is not too much of a downpour.
Sickness: If your
Kindergartener is sick, please call the school office, or you can send me an
email or a text so we can keep track of illnesses.
Weather Related School Closures: Remember, if Vancouver School District declares a 2 Hour Late
Start or is Closed, then our school will be closed too. In case of bad weather,
watch for emails and/or text message notifications from Little Acorn and from
our Remind.com accounts. The Remind.com number
for Little Acorn is 307-459-3175, class code
lapsk20. For Kindergarten, the number is 503-342-8657, class code @473363.
