Kindergarten Newsletter for January 12th-17th, 2015

Recap of the Week: Students really impressed me with their number writing assessment this week. While some of us are still working on those tricky teens, others see the pattern in our counting system and can write almost to 100! We also had a classroom meeting about how we play together, as there have been some unkind words and hands used this week. It was really exciting to hear students coming up with ways to solve these problems with just a little guidance from me!

Math: This week we are going to look at ways to compose a number. For example, 1+4=5; 2+3=5; etc. We will use 2-colored counters to see how this can really be true. As part of this activity we learn how “=” really means “is the same as.” We will challenge ourselves with addition to 10 and work to figure out “how many more to make 10?” using some Unifix Cubes to build 10.

Literacy: This week we are going to break into 3 reading groups, in order to meet students at their individual levels. Some will have to repeat books we read earlier this year, some will keep going at the same rate, and others will start moving at a faster pace than before.

Writing: We are going to really begin Writer’s Workshop. As an introduction we will discuss how real authors have to come up with a topic. They then write, revise and publish their story. To show how the process works, the class will write a story called “How to Build A Snowman” before revising and publishing it together. Later in the week, students will be coming up with their own ideas and revising them before Teacher Caroline publishes it on the computer for them to share with the class.

Social Studies, Art & Science: We continue our winter theme about snow, ice and winter animals. We will learn about symmetry and make snowflakes as well as painting and labeling a winter scene. For a fun art project that goes with our “How to Build A Snowman” story, we are going to make Olaf the Snowman.
We will also learn about Martin Luther King and why he was so important to us. We will do an activity that shows students how it feels when one group is singled out and the others are excluded. This will lead to a simple discussion about equality.

Open House: Parents will be able to explore classrooms on Monday 1/26, Tuesday 1/27 & Thursday 1/29. Please encourage parents to visit classrooms.

Registration: In-house (current students) February 4th at 9:15 upstairs in Jason Lee. It will be a first come first serve number drawing starting at 8:4am. There will be coffee and snacks available for people waiting to register. Open registration February 6th, 9:15 outside Teacher Katie’s office. ***For families who register for a PM class, please provide a second choice for a morning class in the case that there is low enrollment for the afternoons. ***

Stuffed Animal Drive: The Stuffed animal drive is still going on through the church.  Please feel free to donate if you would like to.
