Recap
Of Last Week: Teacher Caroline took the lead as I
was out all week due to the flu in our family. We made Touch Point number
flashcards and used them throughout the week as we worked on adding numbers to
ten. We began our Writer’s Workshop by learning about the process of picking a
Topic and writing a Rough Draft, before making a Final Copy.
Math: This week we are going to work
on measuring. In Kindergarten, we use standard sized objects, such as Unifix
cubes or paperclips to measure. We will have fun measuring and weighing items
that you can find in our classroom. We will discuss why we need to use standard
units to measure after a fun experiment where we count how many steps it takes
each of us to walk from the classroom door to the whiteboard.
Literacy: Throughout the week,
we are going to read 5 book by Laura Numeroff: ‘If You Give A Dog A Donut,’ ‘If
You Give A Cat A Cupcake,’ ‘If You Give A Moose A Muffin,’ ‘If You Give A Mouse
A Cookie,’ and ‘If You Give A Pig A Pancake.’ We will work together at the
carpet to retell each story, recording our observations. At the end of the
week, we will compare and contrast the records we made.
Writing: This week
during our Writer’s Workshop, students will be coming up with their own,
individual topics. They will write their Rough Draft at their own pace and
conference with Teacher Caroline and I before moving on to do their Final
Draft. This means that students will be at different parts of the writing process
from one another. On some days, students will have a writing prompt.
Social Studies, Art & Science: We will finish up our Winter Theme this week as we continue to
talk about the appropriate clothing for different weather. We will make an
outline of our bodies on butcher paper and measure our arms and legs with
different items such as pencils, cubes. We will also ‘dress’ these silhouettes
in winter clothing that we paint on.
Open
House: Our school will be having an open house / explore
the classrooms day this week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday .If you see
parents coming to check out our classroom for next fall and would like to share
your experience in the Kindergarten class with them, feel free. There could be
a few more people in and about our school so be aware. We are really hoping to
have our kindergarten class next Fall. If you know other families that would
like to come check out our school, this is a perfect chance to see what all the
classes are like here and what they offer.
Registration: In-house (current students) February 4th
at 9:15 upstairs in Jason Lee. It will be a first come first serve number
drawing starting at 8:4am. There will be coffee and snacks available for people
waiting to register. Open registration February 6th, 9:15 outside Teacher Katie’s office. ***For
families who register for a PM class, please provide a second choice for a
morning class in the case that there is low enrollment for the afternoons. ***

Winter
Attire:
Please send your kindergartner to school with coats and footwear appropriate
for the weather. Even hats and gloves/mittens are needed on some days as this
week has shown us! Remember we go outside as much as we can, as long as it is
not too cold and there is not too much of a downpour.
Sickness: If your
Kindergartener is sick, please call the school office, or you can send me an
email or a text so we can keep track of illnesses.
Weather Related School Closures: Remember, if Vancouver School District declares a 2 Hour Late
Start or is Closed, then our school will be closed too. In case of bad weather,
watch for emails and/or text message notifications from Little Acorn and from
our Remind.com accounts. The Remind.com number
for Little Acorn is 307-459-3175, class code
lapsk20. For Kindergarten, the number is 503-342-8657, class code @473363.
