Kindergarten Newsletter for January 26th - January 30th, 2015

Recap Of Last Week: Teacher Caroline took the lead as I was out all week due to the flu in our family. We made Touch Point number flashcards and used them throughout the week as we worked on adding numbers to ten. We began our Writer’s Workshop by learning about the process of picking a Topic and writing a Rough Draft, before making a Final Copy.

Math: This week we are going to work on measuring. In Kindergarten, we use standard sized objects, such as Unifix cubes or paperclips to measure. We will have fun measuring and weighing items that you can find in our classroom. We will discuss why we need to use standard units to measure after a fun experiment where we count how many steps it takes each of us to walk from the classroom door to the whiteboard.

Literacy: Throughout the week, we are going to read 5 book by Laura Numeroff: ‘If You Give A Dog A Donut,’ ‘If You Give A Cat A Cupcake,’ ‘If You Give A Moose A Muffin,’ ‘If You Give A Mouse A Cookie,’ and ‘If You Give A Pig A Pancake.’ We will work together at the carpet to retell each story, recording our observations. At the end of the week, we will compare and contrast the records we made.

Writing: This week during our Writer’s Workshop, students will be coming up with their own, individual topics. They will write their Rough Draft at their own pace and conference with Teacher Caroline and I before moving on to do their Final Draft. This means that students will be at different parts of the writing process from one another. On some days, students will have a writing prompt.

Social Studies, Art & Science: We will finish up our Winter Theme this week as we continue to talk about the appropriate clothing for different weather. We will make an outline of our bodies on butcher paper and measure our arms and legs with different items such as pencils, cubes. We will also ‘dress’ these silhouettes in winter clothing that we paint on.

Open House: Our school will be having an open house / explore the classrooms day this week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday .If you see parents coming to check out our classroom for next fall and would like to share your experience in the Kindergarten class with them, feel free. There could be a few more people in and about our school so be aware. We are really hoping to have our kindergarten class next Fall. If you know other families that would like to come check out our school, this is a perfect chance to see what all the classes are like here and what they offer.

Kindergarten Newsletter for January 19th - 23rd, 2015

Recap Of Last Week: We continued to have lots of conversations about how we treat one another both with our actions and with our words. Students are noticeably taking extra care to make sure one anothers’ feelings are taken into account during free choice and recess time.
We did an activity where we gave some students marshmallows and left the others with none, as a way to introduce he idea of unequal treatment. This led to a discussion about being fair and kind to one another. We then read about who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was and why we celebrate his accomplishments

Math: This week we are going to make some flashcards using Touch Points. This is a way to write numbers with dots embedded in the digit to show the value of the number. It helps students with the skill of subitizing, which we have been working on throughout the year. We will also continue working on ways to make 10.

Literacy: Our reading groups are working well. During the time where one group is at the reading table with me, one group works on a literacy activity such as beginning sounds with Teacher Caroline and the other group is working independently, a skill they will need in 1st grade next year.

Writing: Last week we learned how real writers come up with a topic before writing a story. This week students will get to come up with their own topic to write about and then revise it into a Final Copy the following day. We are going to read and compare “Snowmen at Work” and “Snowmen at Night,” before writing our own stories called “Snowmen at School.”

Social Studies, Art & Science: This week we will make a Hot Chocolate picture with puff paint and marshmallows. We will also build some structures from different sized marshmallows, discussing how people who live in cold climates have to use snow and ice to build their homes. We will also do a fun activity about what to wear in different kinds of weather as part of our daily Calendar.

Open House: Parents will be able to explore classrooms on Monday 1/26, Tuesday 1/27 & Thursday 1/29. Please encourage parents to visit classrooms.

Kindergarten Newsletter for January 12th-17th, 2015

Recap of the Week: Students really impressed me with their number writing assessment this week. While some of us are still working on those tricky teens, others see the pattern in our counting system and can write almost to 100! We also had a classroom meeting about how we play together, as there have been some unkind words and hands used this week. It was really exciting to hear students coming up with ways to solve these problems with just a little guidance from me!

Math: This week we are going to look at ways to compose a number. For example, 1+4=5; 2+3=5; etc. We will use 2-colored counters to see how this can really be true. As part of this activity we learn how “=” really means “is the same as.” We will challenge ourselves with addition to 10 and work to figure out “how many more to make 10?” using some Unifix Cubes to build 10.

Literacy: This week we are going to break into 3 reading groups, in order to meet students at their individual levels. Some will have to repeat books we read earlier this year, some will keep going at the same rate, and others will start moving at a faster pace than before.

Writing: We are going to really begin Writer’s Workshop. As an introduction we will discuss how real authors have to come up with a topic. They then write, revise and publish their story. To show how the process works, the class will write a story called “How to Build A Snowman” before revising and publishing it together. Later in the week, students will be coming up with their own ideas and revising them before Teacher Caroline publishes it on the computer for them to share with the class.

Social Studies, Art & Science: We continue our winter theme about snow, ice and winter animals. We will learn about symmetry and make snowflakes as well as painting and labeling a winter scene. For a fun art project that goes with our “How to Build A Snowman” story, we are going to make Olaf the Snowman.
We will also learn about Martin Luther King and why he was so important to us. We will do an activity that shows students how it feels when one group is singled out and the others are excluded. This will lead to a simple discussion about equality.

Open House: Parents will be able to explore classrooms on Monday 1/26, Tuesday 1/27 & Thursday 1/29. Please encourage parents to visit classrooms.
