Kindergarten News for May 11th-15th, 2015

Recap Of The Week: We spent lots of time working on our Mother’s Day paintings. Did you find yours hanging in the hall???? We have been doing lots of review of how to add using a number line and finding the beginning, middle and ending sounds in words. We have been discussing 3 rules for when to use upper case letters in a sentence. We also celebrated Cinco de Mayo and learned a little about why it is important. We started working on the songs we will be singing during our graduation program.

Math: This week we will be learning about solid shapes. We will discuss the difference between them and plane (flat) ones. We will also review the concept of “how many more do I need to make 10?”

Literacy: Please keep reading with your child as those mini-books come home. Practice at home reinforces the learning at school. Make sure your student is tracking as they read. Our sight words for this week are ‘help,’ ‘one,’ ‘where,’ ‘yellow,’ and ‘you.’ Throughout the week students make flash cards, figure out which words go in which shape box, make word pyramids, match words in different fonts, and create their very own word search to give to a friend to solve.

Writing:  Some groups will finish the “When I grow up …” story starter, and then later in the week the prompt will be “I am not afraid of …” and “If I was a butterfly …” We have also been talking about when to use upper case letters in a sentence: 1) The first letter in a sentence; 2) The word ‘I’; 3) The first letter of a name.

Science, Social Studies & Art: We planted our seeds on Friday and will spend some time this week making sure they are watered and waiting for them to sprout. We are also waiting on our butterflies to emerge from their chrysalises. Once they do, we will give them a day or 2 to dry their wings before taking them outside and setting them free. We will be doing some art about the seasons of the year this week. We will look back at the drawings we made earlier in the year to help us remember how trees looked in each season before making a Seasons project.

Progress Reports: The pre-school classes will be sending home progress reports this week. Kindergarteners will receive their end of year (spring) reports on the last Friday of the school year. This allows us to continue learning and assessing until the very end of Kindergarten.

Seussical Jr. Play: As you know, we will be attending the play on May 19th. We are all set with numbers for each of the performances. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility with the changes. Please bring in your ticket money this week. It is $6 per person. There will be no school on this day. For more information about the show, check out this link: http://www.journeytheater.org/shows/seussical-tya/
This Wednesday a docent from the Journey Theater is coming to talk to our students about the play, how to have good manners, theater rules, and to tell them what Journey Theater is.

Playground Clean-up: We are having our annual playground clean-up next Saturday between 9 and 11. Come ready to help with weeding, spreading sand and gravel, and general clean-up of our playground area.

Family Fun Night: Our last Family Fun Night of the year will be on May 21st. This is a free family event and the theme will be Fun With Math & Science.

Fit and Fun at First: This is a fun day hosted by the church on May 30th. There will be a few different fun runs, a bounce house and games.

Summer Camps: We will have 3 summer camps this year: Art Explosion (June 15-19), Knights & Princesses (July 13-17) and Super Hero Week (July 20-24). Registration has already started. Camp is $95 per child per week; $175 for 2 for one week. There is a $25 non-refundable registration fee that will be applied towards camp tuition.

Kindergarten News for May 4th-8th, 2015

Recap Of The Week: We continued to work on symmetry with drawing and building shapes. We also began work on a surprise project for Mother’s Day. We have been watching our caterpillars closely and they are all in the chrysalis stage. We are doing our best to wait patiently for the butterflies to emerge.

Math: This week we are going to be working on skip counting, direction words and doing some work with graphs. As we move toward the end of the year, a lot of the work we do will be revision of concepts we have covered. There will be some assessing too, to see how students are retaining what they have learned.

Literacy: Please keep reading with your child as those mini-books come home. Practice at home reinforces the learning at school. Our sight words for this week ‘funny,’ ‘go,’ ‘me,’ ‘my,’ and ‘not.’ Throughout the week students make flash cards, figure out which words go in which shape box, make word pyramids, match words in different fonts, and create their very own word search to give to a friend to solve.

Writing:  Our story starters this week be “If I lived in a tree-house …” and “When I grow up …”

Science, Social Studies & Art: As I mentioned at the beginning, our caterpillars have built their chrysalises. We moved them into the butterfly net and we are super excited for them to hatch. We did not get to planting  seeds last week, so we will do that this week. We also will be working on our surprises for Mother’s Day.

Seussical Jr. Play: Our school field trip to see the Seussical Jr play presented by the Journey Theater Company is on May 19th! We will be going either to the 9:30 or 11:45 performance on Tuesday May 19th at the theater in Fort Vancouver High School. Unfortunately the earlier show sold out, so please let Teacher Katie or me know if you would like to go to the later performance. There will be no school on this day. For more information about the show, check out this link: http://www.journeytheater.org/shows/seussical-tya/

Family Fun Night: Our last Family Fun Night of the year will be on May 21st. The theme will be Math & Science.

Art ala Carte Fundraiser: We are partnering with Art ala Carte on Saturday May 9th from 9-1. Families can go there and kids can get messy and creative with all sorts of art media and activities! Art ala Carte will donate 50% of sales during those hours back to the preschool!!!

Kindergarten Newsletter for April 27th - May 1st, 2015

Recap Of The Week: We studied symmetry by making shapes on Geo-Boards and finding different lines of symmetry and made some symmetrical butterflies by cutting folded papers and then putting paint and pressing it together. We have been watching our caterpillars grow and can’t wait until they get big enough to make their chrysalises so we can see their life cycle in action. We got to watch a movie showing how the caterpillar makes a chrysalis made by the sister and grandfather of one of our classmates. You can watch it at home by clicking on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7zcMG1MTgU

Math: This week we continue to look at symmetrical shapes. We will sort shapes that can be divided symmetrically from those that cannot, and do some more explorations of different lines of symmetry with our geo-boards.

Literacy: Our sight words for this week ‘for,’ ‘make,’ ‘me,’ ‘two,’ and ‘up.’ Throughout the week students make flash cards, figure out which words go in which shape box, make word pyramids, match words in different fonts, and create their very own word search to give to a friend to solve. During reading groups, we are focusing on finger tracking. Students are beginning to realize that not all people track when they read, so we are talking about how it helps our brain know where to look when we are learning to read.

Writing: This week we will finish up the prompt “My favorite animal is …” on Monday and Tuesday. Our story starter for the rest of the week will be “What shall I do tomorrow?” This is a little different because it is asking students to answer a question, not just complete a ‘story starter’ idea.

Science, Social Studies & Art: Our caterpillars are growing, eating and moving around in their container!! We are waiting with great excitement for them to build their chrysalises so that we can move them into the butterfly net. We are also going to learn about seeds and do some planting this week. We will make a Flowers Growing scene in Spanish to go along with a song we are learning, Somos Como Las Flores (Each of Us is A Flower.) You can watch a little video of the song on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNS2uloUydQ

Seussical Jr. Play: Our school field trip to see the Seussical Jr play presented by the Journey Theater Company is coming up soon! We will be going to the 9:30 performance on Tuesday May 19th at the theater in Fort Vancouver High School. If you are planning on coming, please sign up on the form outside the classroom by Monday (April 27th). Tickets are $6 and can be paid to me or in the office by Friday (May 1st.) As always with field trips, parents are responsible for transportation and supervision of their child. There will be no school on this day. For more information about the show, check out this link: http://www.journeytheater.org/shows/seussical-tya/
