Kindergarten Newsletter For September 30 - October 3, 2014

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we worked on the letters A and B. Throughout the week we brainstormed words containing the /a/ and /b/ sounds at the beginning and in the middle of words. On Friday, we had some fun drawing pictures in shaving foam with those beginning sounds. We also did lots of explorations with apples and leaves as part of our Fall theme.

Math: We will work on number recognition this week and how numbers can be broken down into different parts, e.g. 5 can be made up of 5 and 0, 4 and 1, 3 and 2. We will look at dominos and dice to discuss this and do some activities together to practice the concept.

Literacy: We are ready to do one letter a day! This week we will work on the letters c, d, e, f, and g. As we progress we will start to put letters together to build words. We will practice sounding them out by acting out the signals we have learned.

Writing: We are going to begin writing! We will start writing together. The class will come up with a topic we know well and help instruct me on drawing a picture to describe it. We will make sure to add details and to label it. From here, I will begin to encourage students to come up with their own ideas of things they can write about. As beginning writers, we will mostly be drawing and putting some letters on the page to label. The most important thing right now is for students to make the effort and not be afraid to try to express themselves, so we won’t worry about real spelling. As we write, we are making sure to hold our pencil with a strong grip to ensure we can see the letters we write on the paper. We are also encouraging students to use the 3-finger, or tripod, grip.

Science: This week we continue our Fall observations. We will also begin learning about Our 5 Senses. At first, we will discuss what each of our senses are and what parts of our bodies are related. We will also connect back to Apples and Leaves during theses lessons.

Sharing: Students have begun to ask about bringing items to share, or “show and tell.” If there is time at the end of the day, students can share only 1 item. I would like this activity to be connected to the learning we are doing in school, so this week items should begin with any of the letters c-g or have something to do with Apples, Leaves or Our 5 Senses. Depending on how many items are brought for Sharing each day, we may set up a rotation where students would share on a specific day.

Carnival: The LAPSK all school carnival is this Friday, October 3rd. Pre-sale tickets for food and game bracelets are on sale now. Food Tickets are $1 each and Game Bracelets are $10. They will be more expensive on the day of the Carnival.

Our classroom is responsible for the Bean Bag Toss game. Thank you to those who have already signed up to volunteer to help run the game. A sign-up sheet is outside the classroom and we still have spots available in 30-minute time slots. This will go towards your 2 hours of volunteer time. We will also have a chili cook-off (anyone can take part) and 2 bounce houses. Invite your friends and family and come join the fun!!

Bike Helmets: Remember to send a helmet to school for your child if he or she would like to ride on tricycles or scooters during outside play. Bikes are out on sunny days.

Picture Day: We will be doing individual and classroom pictures on Monday October 6th at 10:00am. The order forms were in your child's cubby last week. We will make sure there are no "messy" activities on picture day, so students can wear their nice clothes.

Sickness: If your Kindergartener is sick, please call the school office, or you can send me an email or a text. Remember to keep kids home if they are running a fever, have a runny nose with mucus, or a constant cough that they can't keep covered. If they can't participate in our class activities, let them stay at home and get better. Thanks for your help in keeping illness to a minimum.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. I am fine with a text or a call, or you can email. I am here to help you and your child have a great kindergarten year!

Thank you for sharing your child with us,

Teacher Sinead & Teacher Caroline

Kindergarten Newsletter for September 22-26, 2014

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Recap of the Week: Last week we began our literacy program by working on our Animal Alphabet Signals. I encourage you to have your child teach you the signals for each letter. In science, we did a lot of activities with leaves, including a walk outside to observe the trees. We also visited the folks over at Kindred. We will be going once a month, Wednesdays or Thursday. Parents are welcome to join us any time.

Math: We will graph the colors of apples that we bring in to share this week. We will also weigh them with a balance scale and measure their height using Unifix Cubes. We will work on matching digits to the number of items by playing a math game called Orchard Math.

Literacy: This week we begin to learn to match sounds to letters this week. We will work on the letters 'a' and 'b' for this week. We will identify words beginning with those sounds and also use the students' names to find more examples of the sounds in the real world. Students will be encouraged to participate by finding items beginning with these sounds. We will probably move faster in the coming weeks as students become familiar with this new routine.

Handwriting: We will work on the letters B and R. We are moving into the letters that contain curves. These are more difficult for little hands to make, so we will be doing lots of encouraging about making the 'round curves.' As we write, we are making sure to hold our pencil with a strong grip to ensure we can see the letters we write on the paper. We are also encouraging students to use the 3-finger, or tripod, grip.

Science: This week we are getting ready for Fall. We are doing lots of explorations with apples, and integrating them across all our learning. We will end the week by making Apple Pizza!

Bike Helmets: Remember to send a helmet to school for your child if he or she would like to ride on tricycles or scooters during outside play. Bikes are out on sunny days.

Kindergarten Newsletter for September 15-19, 2014

Hello Kindergarten Families!

This week we will introduce the Weather to our Calendar lesson. We will talk about what it is like outside and match that with words and pictures to display on our class bulletin board. At the end of the week, we will take a look back and discuss whether the weather was the same or if it changed.

For Math, we will continue working on 1 to 1 correspondence activities. We will match sets of objects to numbers. We will also do an activity where we make a class graph from the letters in our names.

We will learn our alphabet chant this week. We will learn actions that go along with the sound of every letter. By Friday we will be able to act out a signal for each of the 26 letters.

In Handwriting, we will work on the letters E, D, and P. We will talk about "frog hops" where we lift our pencil to make another part of the letter, rather than tracing back over the same lines.

In Science, we are going to continue Living and Non-living by reading a mini-book about what living things need to grow. We will also look at leaves and classify them by colors and shapes. We will go outside and observe the trees around us to learn about deciduous and coniferous trees.

Picture Day is coming! Individual and class pictures will be taken on Oct. 6th, 7th or 9th. The dates have been changed since my last newsletter. Watch for more information on prices and which day our photos will be taken.

Bike Helmets: Remember to send a helmet to school for your child if he or she would like to ride on tricycles or scooters during outside play. Bikes are out on sunny days.

Newsletter: The weekly classroom newsletter will be posted on the website each Sunday by 5pm. Also you can have it emailed to you or the link texted to you via "Remind" on your smart phone. Reading the newsletter each week will keep you up to date with classroom activities and upcoming school events.

Kindred: This week we will walk across the street to sing to the residents of Kindred. We will do this once a month. The residents are mostly older folks who are unable to stay alone in their homes due to health issues. They love having the kids come and sing to them. We call them the "Grandmas and Grandpas" and let the kids know how happy it makes these folks to have us visit. Parents are welcome to join us any time. This week we will go on Thursday morning  (September 18th) at 10:!5 AM.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. I am fine with a text or a call, or you can email. I am here to help you and your child have a great kindergarten year!

Kindergarten Newsletter for September 8-12, 2014

Hello Kindergarten Families,

Everyone had a great first week in Kindergarten. We made new friends and discussed classroom routines, cooperation, and how to be ready to learn. We also explored the classroom and did some "Get To Know You" activities.

This week, we will continue getting to know one another with some activities about our names and making an "All About Me" book. We will also discuss "Manners at School" and "How to Be a Good Listener."

Every day we will do a lesson at the Calendar. There we will learn about Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow; the Date; How Many Days We Have Been At School; and the Weather. This week, we will learn a "Days of the Week" song. On Friday, we will introduce Calendar in Spanish.

For Math, we will be working on 1 to 1 correspondence activities. We will also use Unifix cubes to measure our hands and feet as part of our "All About Me" books.

We will start our Handwriting program towards the end of the week. We will learn how to write the straight (because they have no curves or circles) letters "F" and "E" first.

In Science, we are going to discuss living and non-living, and make the link to real and pretend.

Thank you for sharing your child with us.

Teacher Sinead & Teacher Caroline
